It should be noted that in addition to the incredible accomplishments listed below, Janet Kaye Sims was an adventurous spirit and a world traveler. She believed that life's lessons began with the classroom, but extended out into the world and all the knowledge it has to offer. By her death on June 21, 2007, Janet had traveled to all 50 states in the U.S., as well as 30 different countries.

INNOVATIONS

  • 2003 Hutchinson Community Foundation, "Community Fair Night" Grant
  • 2002 Kal-Tech participant, July 2002
  • 2000 Received 21st Century Communities That Care Grant, to expand our before, after and during the summer child. This included taking students on study trips and transporting them to a local dance studio for lessons.
  • 2001 Implemented Goals 2000 Grant, "Reading to Go," integrating bookbags, with books and a computer to be sent home weekly with kindergarten students.
  • 2000-2002 District #313 received Kansas State Department of Education, Reading Excellence Grant — Obee Elementary School was one of the selected schools.
  • 2000 Implemented Goals 2000 Grant, "Move Into More Learning," integrating movement and took all students to a professional dance studio for the improvement of reading and problem solving.
  • 1999 Pilot-School for Spanish in the Elementary School.
  • 1998-1999 Received SRS Grant to begin "Obee Cares," before and after school child care.
  • 1997-2004 Obee School was selected to be a part of "Break the Mold" Grant, involving three school districts, awarded by the Hutchinson Community Foundation.
  • 1996-2005 Organized and implemented Dillons Scholarships, Dillons Companies donated $7,000 per year for students to further education. A total of $63,000 was committed by Dillons.
  • 1996-2005 Wrote and received grant to collaborate with another school district to begin District #313's Parents As Teachers program.
  • 1996-2005 Developed preschool site in USD #313, involving two school districts which had economically deprived students, those with individual education plans and typically developing students in the same classroom.
  • 1995 Received Hutchinson Community Foundation Grant, involved parents and students in communication skills and assuming responsibility.
  • 1995 Coordinated Headstart socialization visits at Obee Elementary
  • 1994 Wrote and received Goals 2000 Grant
  • 1994 Pilot School, Title VI B Grant with ESSDACK, Curriculum-Based Assessment: Alternative Approaches (Three Year Project)
  • 1994 Member of Steering Committee for beginning Headstart in Reno County
  • 1993 District #313 Pilot School, Technology Integrated Learning System
  • 1991-1994 Planned and organized "Parent Fair," with parent organization, School-Business Partnership, community and staff
  • 1990-2005 Organized D.A.R.E. Program for sixth grade students with Reno County Sheriff's Education Officer
  • 1989-2005 Organized and developed Obee-Dillon Companies School-Business Partnership
  • 1989-2005 Developed "Adopt a Grandparent Program." Retired adults in the community listen to lower elementary students read orally.
